Last spring, the Center for Ethnic Studies paired up with the Humanities Institute to host OSU alum Kevin Payravi for a workshop on editing and creating Wikipedia articles to encourage inclusivity and increase diversity. Students and other members of the Columbus community turned out to contribute to Wikipedia topics related to Asian American Studies, American Indian Studies and Latinx Studies, as well as other articles pertaining to ethnicity.

This event, plus more information on Kevin and his work as a "Wikimedian," has been featured in the latest issue of OSU's Alumni Magazine! You can find it here.

The article describes the event, and goes on to provide tips on how to edit Wikipedia to improve inclusivity: "Spring semester, {Payravi} and graduate student Mia Cariello ’17, Wikimedia coordinator for the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative, led a Wiki editing workshop for Ohio State’s Humanities Institute and Center for Ethnic Studies. Its emphasis was filling Wikipedia’s knowledge and perspective gaps. Beyond explaining how to edit Wikipedia, Payravi and Cariello shed light on disparities in Wikipedia coverage. For instance, the Northern Hemisphere is disproportionately represented, and less than 20% of biographies in English are about women. [Participants} made 79 edits across 18 articles, including eight new entries they drafted."

The article lists the main takeaways from the workshop, listing these tips for editing Wikipedia: know the rules; take care with photos; share your expertise and use your tools.
