This course provides an introduction to Asian American Studies by examining some of the main themes, historical events, and critical frameworks that the field has focused on and developed since it emerged in the late 1960s. Topics include the Asian American movement, U.S. imperialism in Asia, Asian labor migrations, Asian/American racialization in the U.S. and abroad, and intersectional approaches to multiracial, LGBTQ+, and disabled identities. This course explores the intersectional factors shaping the diverse Latinx identities and experiences. By examining the cultural, educational, and political implications of identities, students will gain critical insights into issues like race, gender, immigration, representation, bilingualism, and systemic barriers that will inform effective advocacy efforts. 3408 | Disaster, Displacement and Recovery in Latinx Graphic Narratives

This course will expose students to communities crossed by imposed borders, displaced families, immigrants detained by ICE, Puerto Ricans living the aftermath of disaster, and the social mobility experienced by first generation college students. The primary media students will use to engage with these topics will be comics, webcomics, zines, graphic memoirs and graphic novels. Through an interdisciplinary approach including readings from Cultural Studies, Border Studies, Comic Studies and Latinx Studies, students will analyze structural causes of migration, mobility and immobility: the socio-political, economic, environmental, and cultural phenomena contributing to and resulting from forced displacement, incarceration, disability, and the disaster aftermath. The works contained in this course illustrate people’s hopes and fears about staying, leaving and resisting. GEN Themes: Migration, Mobility and Immobility

Survey of contemporary Latinx Art in the United States from its origins in the 1960s Civil Rights Movement through today. U.S. Latinx Art refers to the artistic, visual, and creative production emerging from Latinx communities in the context of diaspora after immigration from Latin America. This course will examine the visual arts created by communities with a multigenerational presence in this country, such as Mexican-Americans, Central Americans and Puerto Ricans, as well as newer arrivals. It treats works of art and activism across multiple media, from painting and sculpture to murals, photography, installation, experimental performance, posters, film, theatre, poetry, and artivism. This course examines representations of Asian Americans in mainstream U.S. film, television, and popular culture as well as the way Asian Americans produce grassroots media to challenge official narratives and hierarchies. Students will hone their skills in researching and analyzing primary sources in media and popular culture while reflecting on questions of power, Asian American identity-formation, and meaning-making.
