Awards
Thanks to the generosity of Frances Shih Fen Hsieh, an Ohio resident since 1979 and Columbus resident since 1992, the Asian American Studies Program at OSU will be offering two new academic awards, each for $1,000.00. The scholarships are named in honor of Frances Shih Fen Hsieh's parents, Chin Hua Hsieh and Yun Mei Lee Hsieh.
The Undergraduate Thesis Award will be given to an OSU undergraduate student for the best research paper written on any subject in the field of Asian American Studies.
Criteria: A 15-30 page Thesis or research paper of similar quality. The paper should demonstrate 1) an excellent synthesis of available scholarship and 2) the ability to go beyond assembling evidence to interpretation and analysis, which develops new areas for debates within the field.
The Graduate Research Award will be given to an OSU graduate student for the best research paper written on any subject in the field of Asian American Studies. The competition is open to either Master's or Ph.D. students.
Criteria: A 25-40 page Master's Thesis or research paper of publishable quality. This paper should present new research in the field of Asian American Studies and assist the individual in establishing her or his own voice as a scholar.
Deadline: The 2008 deadline will be announced late Winter Quarter 2008.
Submission Instructions: Please submit 5 paper copies of your essay to
the Asian American Studies office in 105 Brown Hall. Be sure to provide
the following information on a separate cover sheet and remove all forms
of identification from the essay submission:
- Name
- Title of Paper
- Major or Field of Study:
- Academic Rank
- Contact Information (address, phone number, email)
- Any community / volunteer service related to Asian American communities
Announcement of Award: At the end of Spring Quarter 2008
Criteria for Evaluation:
- Significance/originality of contribution to Asian American studies
- Clarity of writing and cohesiveness of argument
- Depth/extensiveness/scope of scholarly effort
- Methodological/analytical rigor
